It might look to be an easy step. Just open a new file and start typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I like to have a solid working name and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could accelerate his composing procedure ~600% by creating a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I had been repeating the exact same procedure for every single new article I work . Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and over means that’s probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to create a few templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for the most common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They are just Markdown files, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to write. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of each gist to view the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file in your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot point using a few notes about what I should write in that section. From the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other nicely, since I understand the arrangement of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became much more involved. I’d actually planned to do a full rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours simply to have the outline done, so that I set off the draft for another day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words written in my outline, and a good idea about what each segment would contain and how they would work together to create a sense of flow in the article. Even though outlining took more than usual, drafting took time because I’d set myself up for victory. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different process to how I normally do the job, and that I was tempted a few times to prevent the extra research or thinking necessary to complete the outline correctly. I frequently put these things off till I’m drafting, which is when I should be centered on writing instead. I adhered to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I have really overhauled my outline and study process by using this template. It is a more effective part of the procedure now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, also.
