It may look like an easy step. Just open a new file and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I like to get a strong working title and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could speed up his composing procedure ~600% by producing an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the exact same procedure for every single new post I work . Like any fantastic programmer, I realized repeating the same work over and above means that’s probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for the most common Ghost blog article structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They’re just Markdown files, so go ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of each gist to observe the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file in your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot line with a couple of notes about what I need to write in that section. From the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow into each other well, since I know the arrangement of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my summarizing procedure became much more involved. I’d really planned to perform a full rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours just to get the outline done, so that I set off the draft for another day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a good idea about what each segment would contain and how they would work together to create a feeling of flow from the article. Even though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took time since I’d put myself up for victory. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It was quite a different procedure to the way I normally work, and I was tempted a few times to prevent the extra research or thinking required to fill out the outline properly. I frequently put these things off till I am drafting, and that’s when I should be focused on writing instead. I adhered to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I’ve actually overhauled my outline and study process by applying this template. It is a more effective part of my procedure now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it will lead to better work, also.
