It may seem like a simple step. Just open a new document and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to get a strong working title and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he found he could accelerate his composing process ~600% by producing an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I had been repeating the same procedure for every single new post I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realized repeating the same work over and above means that’s probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I began by developing a template for my common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They’re just Markdown files, so go ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to write. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of each list to view the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file on your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot line with a couple of notes about what I need to write in that section. By the time I’m done, I will have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other well, because I know the arrangement of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became more involved. I’d really planned to do a full rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours simply to have the outline done, so I put off the draft for a different day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a solid idea about what each section would contain and how they’d work together to create a sense of flow from the post. Even though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took time because I’d set myself up for victory. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different process to how I normally do the job, and I had been tempted a couple of times to prevent the additional research or thinking necessary to fill out the outline properly. I frequently put off these things until I’m drafting, and that’s when I must be centered on writing rather. I stuck to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I had.
I have actually coined my outline and research process by using this template. It’s a more productive part of my procedure now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it will lead to better work, also.
