It may look like a simple step. Just open a new file and begin typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to have a solid working name and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he found he could accelerate his composing procedure ~600% by creating an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the exact same process for every single new post I work . Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and above means that is probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for the most common Ghost blog post structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They are just Markdown files, so go ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of each gist to view the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file on your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot line using a couple of notes about what I should write in that section. By the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow into each other nicely, because I understand the arrangement of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I found that my summarizing procedure became much more involved. I had actually planned to do a complete rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a couple of hours just to have the outline done, so I set off the draft for another day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a good idea of what each section would contain and how they would work together to create a feeling of flow from the post. Even though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took less time because I’d put myself up for victory. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different process to the way I normally work, and that I had been tempted a few times to avoid the additional research or thinking necessary to fill out the outline correctly. I frequently put off these things until I’m drafting, and that’s when I must be centered on writing rather. I stuck to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I’ve really overhauled my outline and research procedure by using this template. It’s a more effective part of my process now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, also.
