It may seem like a simple step. Simply open a new file and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I like to get a solid working title and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he found he could accelerate his composing procedure ~600% by creating an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the same procedure for every single new post I work . Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the same work over and above means that is probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to create some templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for the common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John constructions his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They’re just Markdown files, so go ahead and save , rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click the”view raw” link on the bottom of each list to observe the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file in your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot line using a couple of notes about what I need to write in that segment. By the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow into each other well, because I understand the structure of the entire piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became more involved. I had actually planned to perform a full rough draft of that post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours simply to have the outline done, so that I put off the draft for a different day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a solid idea of what each segment would comprise and how they would work together to create a feeling of flow in the post. Even though outlining took more than usual, drafting took time because I’d set myself up for success. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different procedure to how I normally work, and I was tempted a couple of times to prevent the additional research or thinking required to fill out the outline properly. I often put these things off until I am drafting, and that’s when I should be focused on writing instead. I stuck to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I’ve really overhauled my outline and study procedure by using this template. It’s a more productive part of the process now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, also.
