It might look to be an easy step. Just open a new file and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to have a strong working title and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could accelerate his writing process ~600% by creating an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I had been repeating the exact same process for every single new post I work on. Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and above means that is probably a good opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for my most common Ghost blog article structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to mepersonally, I also created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They’re only Markdown files, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to write. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of each list to observe the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file in your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot line with a few notes about what I need to write in that section. By the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow into each other nicely, because I understand the structure of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became more involved. I’d actually planned to perform a full rough draft of that post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours simply to have the outline done, so that I set the draft off for another day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a good idea about what each segment would comprise and how they would work together to create a sense of flow in the post. Though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took less time because I had set myself up for victory. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different process to how I normally do the job, and I had been tempted a couple of times to prevent the extra research or thinking necessary to fill out the outline properly. I frequently put these things off until I am drafting, which is when I must be centered on writing rather. I adhered to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I had.
I’ve really coined my outline and research procedure by using this template. It’s a more productive part of the procedure now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better work, also.
