It may look like an easy step. Just open a new file and begin typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to get a solid working title and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could accelerate his composing procedure ~600 percent by producing a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the same procedure for every new post I work on. Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and above means that is probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for my common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I also created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They’re just Markdown documents, so go ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to write. Click the”view raw” link on the bottom of every gist to observe the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file on your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot line using a few notes about what I should write in that section. By the time I’m done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow into each other nicely, since I know the structure of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became much more involved. I’d actually planned to perform a complete rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours just to have the outline done, so that I put the draft off for another day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a solid idea of what each segment would contain and how they would work together to create a feeling of flow in the article. Though outlining took more than normal, drafting took time because I’d set myself up for victory. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It was quite a different process to how I normally do the job, and that I was tempted a few times to avoid the additional research or thinking required to fill out the outline correctly. I frequently put these things off until I am drafting, and that’s when I should be centered on writing rather. I stuck to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I have actually overhauled my outline and study procedure by using this template. It’s a more effective part of my process now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it will lead to better work, also.
