It might look to be an easy step. Simply open a new document and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to get a strong working name and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could accelerate his writing process ~600 percent by creating an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I had been repeating the exact same process for every new article I work . Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and above means that’s probably a good opportunity for automation.
So I decided to create a few templates for myself.
I began by developing a template for my common Ghost blog post structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They are just Markdown documents, so go ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to write. Click on the”view raw” link on the bottom of each gist to observe the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file in your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot point using a couple of notes about what I need to write in that section. By the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other well, since I know the arrangement of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became much more involved. I had really planned to perform a full rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours just to have the outline done, so I put the draft off for a different day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, and a good idea of what each segment would comprise and how they’d work together to create a sense of flow in the post. Though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took less time since I’d set myself up for success. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It was quite a different procedure to the way I normally do the job, and I was tempted a few times to prevent the additional research or thinking required to complete the outline correctly. I often put off these things until I’m drafting, and that’s when I should be centered on writing instead. I adhered to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I have really coined my outline and research process by using this template. It is a more effective part of the procedure now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, also.
