It may seem to be a simple step. Just open a new file and begin typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I like to get a solid working title and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he found he could accelerate his writing process ~600 percent by creating a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the exact same process for every new post I work . Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and above means that’s probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I began by developing a template for the common Ghost blog article structure. Since that structure’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They are only Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of each gist to observe the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file in your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot point using a couple of notes about what I need to write in that segment. From the time I’m done, I will have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow into each other nicely, since I understand the arrangement of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became much more involved. I’d actually planned to do a full rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a few hours just to get the outline done, so that I set off the draft for another day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a good idea about what each segment would comprise and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow in the article. Though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took time since I’d put myself up for victory. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It was quite a different process to how I normally do the job, and that I had been tempted a couple of times to prevent the additional research or thinking necessary to complete the outline properly. I frequently put these things off till I’m drafting, which is when I should be centered on writing rather. I adhered to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I have really coined my outline and research process by applying this template. It is a more effective part of the procedure now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, too.
