It might look like an easy step. Simply open a new file and start typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to get a strong working name and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could accelerate his composing process ~600 percent by producing a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the exact same process for every new article I work . Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and over means that’s probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I began by developing a template for the most common Ghost blog post structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John constructions his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They are just Markdown documents, so go ahead and save , rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of every gist to view the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file in your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot line with a couple of notes about what I need to write in that segment. By the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other well, since I know the structure of the entire piece in advance.
Using the template, I found that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I’d really planned to perform a complete rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a couple of hours just to have the outline done, so I put the draft off for a different day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a good idea about what each section would comprise and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow from the post. Even though outlining took more than usual, drafting took time because I had set myself up for victory. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different process to how I normally do the job, and I was tempted a few times to avoid the additional research or thinking required to complete the outline correctly. I frequently put these things off until I’m drafting, and that’s when I must be centered on writing instead. I stuck to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I had.
I’ve really coined my outline and research procedure by applying this template. It’s a more productive part of my process now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better work, also.
