It might seem like a simple step. Simply open a new file and begin typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to have a strong working name and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could accelerate his composing procedure ~600 percent by producing a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the same process for every new post I work . Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and over means that is probably a good opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for the most common Ghost blog post structure. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I also created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They’re just Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click the”view raw” link on the bottom of every gist to view the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file on your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot line using a couple of notes about what I should write in that segment. By the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow into each other well, because I understand the structure of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I had actually planned to perform a full rough draft of that post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours simply to get the outline done, so I put the draft off for a different day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, and a good idea of what each section would comprise and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow from the article. Though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took less time since I’d set myself up for victory. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It was quite a different procedure to how I normally do the job, and I had been tempted a couple of times to prevent the additional research or thinking required to complete the outline correctly. I often put these things off until I am drafting, which is when I should be focused on writing rather. I stuck to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I have actually overhauled my outline and research procedure by using this template. It’s a more productive part of my process now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, too.
