business plan timeline template
It might seem like an easy step. Simply open a new file and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to get a strong working name and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he found he could speed up his composing process ~600 percent by creating an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the exact same procedure for every new article I work . Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and above means that’s probably a good opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for my most common Ghost blog article structure. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John constructions his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They’re only Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click the”view raw” link on the bottom of every gist to observe the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file in your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot line using a couple of notes about what I should write in that segment. By the time I’m done, I will have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow into each other well, since I know the structure of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became much more involved. I had really planned to do a full rough draft of that post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours just to get the outline done, so I set the draft off for another day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a solid idea about what each segment would contain and how they would work together to create a feeling of flow in the post. Though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took less time because I had set myself up for victory. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different procedure to the way I normally work, and that I had been tempted a couple of times to avoid the additional research or thinking necessary to fill out the outline properly. I often put these things off until I’m drafting, and that’s when I must be centered on writing instead. I stuck to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I’ve really coined my outline and study procedure by applying this template. It’s a more effective part of the process now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, also.
