It may look to be a simple step. Simply open a new document and begin typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to get a strong working name and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could accelerate his writing process ~600% by creating a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I had been repeating the same procedure for every new post I work . Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and over means that is probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for the common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They’re only Markdown files, so go ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link on the bottom of every list to observe the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file in your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot line with a couple of notes about what I should write in that segment. By the time I’m done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other nicely, because I understand the arrangement of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became more involved. I had really planned to do a complete rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a couple of hours simply to get the outline done, so I set the draft off for a different day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, and a solid idea about what each section would comprise and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow in the article. Even though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took time since I had put myself up for victory. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different process to the way I normally work, and I was tempted a couple of times to avoid the additional research or thinking required to complete the outline properly. I frequently put these things off until I’m drafting, and that’s when I should be focused on writing instead. I adhered to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I’ve really coined my outline and study procedure by using this template. It’s a more productive part of the procedure now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, also.
