It might look to be an easy step. Simply open a new document and start typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I like to have a strong working title and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he found he could speed up his writing process ~600% by producing a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the same process for every single new post I work on. Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and over means that is probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to create a few templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for my most common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They’re only Markdown documents, so go ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to write. Click on the”view raw” link on the bottom of each gist to observe the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file in your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot line with a couple of notes about what I need to write in that section. By the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow into each other nicely, since I understand the structure of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I’d really planned to perform a full rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a couple of hours simply to have the outline done, so that I put off the draft for another day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a good idea about what each section would contain and how they would work together to create a sense of flow in the post. Even though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took less time since I’d set myself up for success. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different process to how I normally do the job, and that I was tempted a few times to prevent the extra research or thinking necessary to complete the outline properly. I often put these things off till I’m drafting, which is when I should be centered on writing rather. I adhered to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I’ve actually overhauled my outline and study procedure by applying this template. It’s a more effective part of my procedure now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, also.
