It may look like an easy step. Just open a new file and begin typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I like to have a solid working title and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he found he could speed up his writing process ~600 percent by creating an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the same process for every single new article I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and above means that is probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for the most common Ghost blog article structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to mepersonally, I also created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They are only Markdown files, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click on the”view raw” link on the bottom of each list to view the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file on your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot line with a few notes about what I should write in that segment. From the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow into each other well, because I know the structure of the entire piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became much more involved. I’d really planned to do a complete rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a couple of hours just to get the outline done, so I set off the draft for a different day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words written in my outline, and a good idea about what each section would contain and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow from the post. Though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took less time since I had set myself up for victory. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different process to the way I normally work, and that I had been tempted a few times to prevent the additional research or thinking required to complete the outline properly. I frequently put these things off until I’m drafting, and that’s when I should be focused on writing instead. I adhered to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I’ve really coined my outline and research procedure by applying this template. It is a more productive part of my process now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, also.
