calendar template october 2019
It might seem to be a simple step. Just open a new document and start typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to get a strong working title and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he found he could speed up his composing process ~600 percent by producing an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the same procedure for every single new article I work . Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and over means that is probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I began by developing a template for my most common Ghost blog post structure. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They are only Markdown files, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of each gist to view the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file on your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot point with a few notes about what I should write in that section. From the time I’m done, I will have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other well, since I know the structure of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became much more involved. I had actually planned to do a complete rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a couple of hours just to have the outline done, so I put the draft off for another day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a solid idea about what each segment would contain and how they would work together to create a sense of flow in the article. Even though outlining took more than usual, drafting took time since I had put myself up for success. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different process to how I normally work, and I had been tempted a few times to prevent the additional research or thinking necessary to fill out the outline correctly. I frequently put off these things until I’m drafting, and that’s when I must be centered on writing rather. I stuck to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I have really coined my outline and research procedure by applying this template. It is a more effective part of the process now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, too.
