It might seem like a simple step. Simply open a new document and begin typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to get a strong working title and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he found he could accelerate his writing process ~600% by producing a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the exact same procedure for every new post I work on. Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and over means that is probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to create some templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for my most common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They are only Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of every gist to view the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file in your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot point using a few notes about what I need to write in that section. From the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other nicely, because I understand the arrangement of the entire piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became much more involved. I had really planned to do a full rough draft of that post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours simply to have the outline done, so I put off the draft for a different day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words written in my outline, and a solid idea about what each section would comprise and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow in the article. Though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took time since I’d put myself up for success. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It was quite a different procedure to the way I normally work, and I was tempted a couple of times to avoid the extra research or thinking necessary to complete the outline properly. I often put these things off until I am drafting, which is when I must be centered on writing instead. I stuck to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I’ve actually coined my outline and study procedure by using this template. It is a more effective part of the process now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, too.
