It might seem to be a simple step. Just open a new file and start typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I like to have a solid working name and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could speed up his composing process ~600% by producing an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the same process for every single new post I work . Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and above means that’s probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to create some templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for my most common Ghost blog article arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John constructions his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They’re only Markdown files, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of every list to observe the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file in your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot point with a few notes about what I should write in that section. From the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow into each other well, because I understand the arrangement of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became much more involved. I’d really planned to perform a full rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a couple of hours just to have the outline done, so that I set off the draft for a different day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a solid idea of what each segment would comprise and how they would work together to create a sense of flow from the article. Though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took less time because I had set myself up for victory. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It was quite a different procedure to how I normally do the job, and I had been tempted a couple of times to prevent the additional research or thinking required to fill out the outline properly. I often put off these things till I am drafting, which is when I must be centered on writing instead. I stuck to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I’ve really coined my outline and research process by using this template. It’s a more productive part of the procedure now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, too.
