It might look to be an easy step. Just open a new file and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to have a strong working name and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could accelerate his composing procedure ~600% by creating a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the same process for every new article I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and above means that is probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I began by developing a template for the common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John constructions his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They are just Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of each gist to observe the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file on your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot line using a couple of notes about what I need to write in that segment. From the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other nicely, because I know the structure of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became much more involved. I’d really planned to perform a complete rough draft of that post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours simply to have the outline done, so that I put off the draft for a different day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, and a good idea about what each segment would comprise and how they’d work together to create a sense of flow in the article. Even though outlining took more than normal, drafting took less time since I’d set myself up for success. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different procedure to how I normally do the job, and I was tempted a couple of times to prevent the extra research or thinking necessary to fill out the outline correctly. I frequently put these things off till I’m drafting, which is when I should be focused on writing rather. I adhered to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I had.
I have really coined my outline and study process by applying this template. It is a more productive part of the process now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, too.
