It may look like an easy step. Simply open a new file and start typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to get a solid working title and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he found he could speed up his composing process ~600% by creating an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I had been repeating the exact same procedure for every new post I work . Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and above means that is probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to create some templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for my most common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I also created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They are just Markdown files, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link on the bottom of each gist to observe the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file on your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot line using a couple of notes about what I need to write in that section. From the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow into each other well, since I understand the structure of the entire piece in advance.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became much more involved. I had actually planned to perform a full rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a couple of hours just to get the outline done, so I set off the draft for a different day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a good idea about what each segment would contain and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow from the article. Though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took less time since I’d set myself up for success. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It was quite a different process to how I normally work, and that I was tempted a few times to avoid the additional research or thinking required to complete the outline properly. I often put off these things until I’m drafting, and that’s when I should be focused on writing instead. I stuck to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I have actually coined my outline and research process by using this template. It’s a more productive part of my process now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, too.
