It may look to be a simple step. Simply open a new document and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to get a solid working name and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could speed up his composing process ~600% by creating a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I had been repeating the same process for every single new post I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realized repeating the same work over and over means that is probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to create some templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for my common Ghost blog article structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They’re only Markdown documents, so go ahead and save , rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of every gist to view the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file on your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot point with a few notes about what I need to write in that segment. From the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow into each other well, since I know the arrangement of the entire piece in advance.
Using the template, I found that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I’d really planned to perform a full rough draft of that post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours just to have the outline done, so I set the draft off for another day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a solid idea of what each segment would contain and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow from the article. Even though outlining took more than normal, drafting took time because I’d put myself up for success. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It was quite a different process to how I normally do the job, and I was tempted a few times to avoid the additional research or thinking necessary to complete the outline correctly. I often put off these things till I’m drafting, and that’s when I should be focused on writing instead. I stuck to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I’ve really overhauled my outline and study process by using this template. It’s a more productive part of the process now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it will lead to better work, also.
