It may look to be an easy step. Simply open a new document and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to get a strong working title and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he found he could accelerate his writing procedure ~600 percent by producing a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I had been repeating the same process for every single new post I work . Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the same work over and above means that is probably a good opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I began by developing a template for the most common Ghost blog article structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to mepersonally, I also created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They’re only Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to write. Click the”view raw” link on the bottom of every list to view the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file in your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot point using a couple of notes about what I need to write in that section. From the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other nicely, since I understand the arrangement of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became more involved. I had really planned to perform a complete rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a couple of hours simply to get the outline done, so that I set off the draft for a different day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words written in my outline, and a good idea about what each segment would contain and how they would work together to create a sense of flow in the post. Though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took less time since I had put myself up for victory. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different process to how I normally do the job, and I had been tempted a few times to prevent the additional research or thinking required to fill out the outline properly. I often put off these things until I’m drafting, which is when I must be focused on writing rather. I stuck to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I had.
I have actually coined my outline and research procedure by applying this template. It is a more productive part of my procedure now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, too.
