It may seem like an easy step. Just open a new file and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to have a strong working name and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could speed up his composing procedure ~600% by producing a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the exact same process for every single new post I work . Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the same work over and over means that is probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to create a few templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for the common Ghost blog article structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They’re just Markdown files, so go ahead and save , rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to write. Click on the”view raw” link on the bottom of every list to view the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file in your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot point with a few notes about what I need to write in that section. By the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow into each other nicely, because I understand the arrangement of the entire piece in advance.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became more involved. I had really planned to do a complete rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a couple of hours simply to have the outline done, so that I put the draft off for another day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a good idea about what each section would comprise and how they would work together to create a sense of flow from the article. Even though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took time because I had put myself up for victory. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It was quite a different process to the way I normally work, and I was tempted a few times to prevent the extra research or thinking necessary to complete the outline properly. I frequently put these things off until I’m drafting, and that’s when I must be focused on writing instead. I stuck to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I’ve really overhauled my outline and research procedure by using this template. It’s a more effective part of the process now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better work, too.
