It might seem like a simple step. Just open a new file and begin typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to get a strong working name and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could accelerate his composing procedure ~600% by creating an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the same process for every single new article I work on. Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and above means that’s probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to create a few templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for my common Ghost blog article structure. Since that structure’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They’re only Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of each gist to observe the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file on your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot point using a few notes about what I should write in that segment. By the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other nicely, since I understand the structure of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became much more involved. I’d actually planned to do a full rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a couple of hours just to get the outline done, so I set the draft off for a different day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, and a solid idea about what each section would contain and how they would work together to create a sense of flow from the post. Even though outlining took more than usual, drafting took less time since I’d put myself up for victory. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It was quite a different procedure to the way I normally do the job, and I was tempted a couple of times to avoid the extra research or thinking necessary to complete the outline correctly. I often put these things off till I am drafting, which is when I must be focused on writing rather. I adhered to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I had.
I’ve really overhauled my outline and research procedure by using this template. It is a more productive part of my procedure now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, also.
