It might seem like a simple step. Simply open a new file and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to have a strong working name and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he found he could speed up his composing procedure ~600 percent by creating a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the exact same process for every new post I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and above means that is probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for my most common Ghost blog article arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John constructions his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They are only Markdown files, so go ahead and save , rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link on the bottom of each gist to view the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file in your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot line with a few notes about what I need to write in that section. By the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other nicely, because I know the arrangement of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became much more involved. I’d actually planned to perform a complete rough draft of that post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours simply to have the outline done, so that I put off the draft for another day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a solid idea about what each section would comprise and how they’d work together to create a sense of flow in the article. Though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took less time because I’d put myself up for victory. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different procedure to how I normally do the job, and that I had been tempted a few times to prevent the extra research or thinking required to fill out the outline correctly. I frequently put these things off till I’m drafting, which is when I must be centered on writing instead. I stuck to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I have really coined my outline and study process by using this template. It is a more productive part of my procedure now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, also.
