It may look like a simple step. Simply open a new document and start typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I like to get a strong working title and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he found he could speed up his writing procedure ~600 percent by creating a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the exact same procedure for every new post I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and above means that is probably a good opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I began by developing a template for my most common Ghost blog article structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They’re just Markdown files, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of each list to view the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file in your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot line with a few notes about what I should write in that segment. By the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow into each other well, because I understand the structure of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became more involved. I had really planned to do a complete rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours simply to get the outline done, so that I put the draft off for another day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a good idea about what each section would contain and how they would work together to create a sense of flow in the article. Even though outlining took more than normal, drafting took less time since I had set myself up for success. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different process to how I normally work, and that I was tempted a couple of times to avoid the extra research or thinking required to complete the outline correctly. I frequently put these things off till I’m drafting, which is when I should be focused on writing instead. I stuck to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I have really overhauled my outline and research procedure by using this template. It’s a more effective part of the procedure now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, also.
