It may look to be an easy step. Just open a new document and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to get a solid working name and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could accelerate his writing procedure ~600% by producing an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I had been repeating the same process for every single new article I work . Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and above means that is probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to create a few templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for the common Ghost blog article structure. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I also created a template based on how John constructions his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They are just Markdown files, so go ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to write. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of each list to observe the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file on your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot line with a few notes about what I should write in that segment. By the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other nicely, because I know the arrangement of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became much more involved. I had actually planned to do a complete rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a couple of hours just to have the outline done, so that I put off the draft for another day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a good idea of what each section would comprise and how they would work together to create a sense of flow from the post. Even though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took less time since I’d set myself up for victory. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different procedure to the way I normally work, and that I was tempted a couple of times to avoid the extra research or thinking required to fill out the outline properly. I often put off these things till I’m drafting, and that’s when I must be focused on writing rather. I adhered to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I had.
I have really overhauled my outline and study process by using this template. It is a more productive part of my procedure now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, too.
