It might seem like an easy step. Simply open a new document and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I like to get a strong working title and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he found he could accelerate his composing procedure ~600 percent by producing an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the exact same process for every single new article I work . Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the same work over and over means that is probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for the common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They are just Markdown files, so go ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to write. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of each gist to observe the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file on your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot point with a couple of notes about what I need to write in that segment. By the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow into each other well, because I know the arrangement of the entire piece in advance.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became much more involved. I had actually planned to perform a full rough draft of that post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours simply to get the outline done, so I put off the draft for another day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a solid idea of what each segment would comprise and how they’d work together to create a sense of flow from the post. Even though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took less time because I’d set myself up for victory. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It was quite a different process to how I normally do the job, and that I was tempted a couple of times to avoid the extra research or thinking necessary to complete the outline correctly. I frequently put off these things until I’m drafting, which is when I must be centered on writing rather. I stuck to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I have actually coined my outline and study process by using this template. It is a more productive part of my process now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, too.
