It may seem like an easy step. Simply open a new document and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to get a solid working title and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he found he could speed up his writing procedure ~600% by creating a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the same procedure for every single new article I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realized repeating the same work over and above means that is probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I began by developing a template for the most common Ghost blog article arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I also created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They are just Markdown files, so go ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of each list to observe the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file on your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot line with a few notes about what I should write in that segment. From the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other nicely, since I understand the arrangement of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became more involved. I had really planned to do a full rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a few hours simply to get the outline done, so that I set off the draft for a different day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a good idea of what each section would contain and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow from the article. Even though outlining took more than normal, drafting took less time because I’d set myself up for victory. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different process to how I normally work, and I was tempted a couple of times to avoid the additional research or thinking required to fill out the outline properly. I frequently put these things off till I am drafting, and that’s when I must be focused on writing rather. I adhered to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I have actually overhauled my outline and research process by applying this template. It is a more productive part of my process now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, also.
