It may look like a simple step. Simply open a new document and start typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I like to get a solid working name and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could speed up his composing process ~600% by producing an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the exact same procedure for every single new article I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and above means that is probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for the common Ghost blog article arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John constructions his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They are just Markdown files, so go ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to write. Click on the”view raw” link on the bottom of every gist to view the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file on your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot line with a few notes about what I should write in that segment. By the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow into each other nicely, because I understand the arrangement of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became more involved. I had actually planned to perform a complete rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a few hours simply to get the outline done, so that I set off the draft for a different day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a solid idea of what each segment would contain and how they would work together to create a feeling of flow from the article. Though outlining took more than usual, drafting took less time since I had put myself up for victory. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It was quite a different process to how I normally work, and I had been tempted a few times to avoid the extra research or thinking required to complete the outline correctly. I frequently put off these things till I am drafting, and that’s when I must be centered on writing instead. I adhered to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I’ve really coined my outline and study process by using this template. It’s a more productive part of the procedure now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, too.
