cause and effect diagram template
It might look like an easy step. Simply open a new document and start typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to have a strong working name and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he found he could accelerate his composing process ~600% by creating a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the same procedure for every new post I work on. Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and over means that is probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to create some templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for the common Ghost blog post structure. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I also created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They’re just Markdown files, so go ahead and save , rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of each gist to observe the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file in your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot line with a couple of notes about what I need to write in that segment. By the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow into each other well, since I understand the structure of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became more involved. I had actually planned to do a complete rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours simply to have the outline done, so that I set off the draft for a different day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a solid idea of what each segment would contain and how they’d work together to create a sense of flow from the post. Even though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took time because I’d put myself up for victory. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different procedure to the way I normally work, and I was tempted a few times to prevent the additional research or thinking required to fill out the outline properly. I frequently put these things off until I’m drafting, which is when I must be focused on writing rather. I adhered to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I had.
I have actually overhauled my outline and study process by using this template. It is a more effective part of my process now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it will lead to better work, too.
