It may look to be a simple step. Simply open a new file and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to get a solid working name and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could accelerate his writing procedure ~600% by creating an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the same procedure for every new article I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realized repeating the same work over and above means that’s probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to create a few templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for my common Ghost blog article structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John constructions his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They’re just Markdown documents, so go ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link on the bottom of every gist to view the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file in your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot line using a couple of notes about what I need to write in that section. By the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other nicely, since I know the arrangement of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I found that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I’d really planned to perform a complete rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a few hours just to have the outline done, so that I put the draft off for a different day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a solid idea about what each segment would contain and how they would work together to create a sense of flow in the article. Even though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took time because I’d set myself up for victory. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different process to how I normally do the job, and that I was tempted a couple of times to avoid the extra research or thinking necessary to complete the outline correctly. I often put these things off till I’m drafting, and that’s when I must be focused on writing instead. I stuck to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I had.
I’ve really overhauled my outline and research process by applying this template. It is a more productive part of the procedure now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, also.
