It might look like a simple step. Simply open a new file and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to have a strong working name and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could accelerate his writing procedure ~600% by creating an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the exact same procedure for every new post I work . Like any fantastic programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and above means that’s probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for the most common Ghost blog article structure. Since that structure’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They’re only Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link on the bottom of each gist to view the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file in your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot point using a couple of notes about what I should write in that segment. From the time I’m done, I will have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow into each other well, because I know the arrangement of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I’d really planned to perform a complete rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours simply to have the outline done, so that I put off the draft for a different day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a good idea about what each segment would contain and how they’d work together to create a sense of flow in the article. Though outlining took more than normal, drafting took less time because I’d put myself up for victory. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different procedure to how I normally work, and that I had been tempted a few times to avoid the extra research or thinking necessary to complete the outline correctly. I frequently put these things off till I’m drafting, and that’s when I must be centered on writing instead. I stuck to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I’ve really coined my outline and study process by applying this template. It’s a more productive part of my procedure now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, also.
