It may seem to be a simple step. Simply open a new file and begin typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to have a strong working title and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he found he could accelerate his composing procedure ~600 percent by creating a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the exact same procedure for every single new article I work on. Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and over means that is probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to create some templates for myself.
I began by developing a template for the common Ghost blog post structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John constructions his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They are only Markdown files, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link on the bottom of each list to view the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file on your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot point with a couple of notes about what I need to write in that segment. From the time I’m done, I will have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other nicely, since I understand the structure of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became much more involved. I had really planned to do a complete rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a couple of hours simply to get the outline done, so that I put the draft off for a different day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a solid idea about what each segment would contain and how they would work together to create a feeling of flow in the post. Even though outlining took more than normal, drafting took less time since I had put myself up for victory. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It was quite a different procedure to the way I normally do the job, and I was tempted a few times to prevent the additional research or thinking necessary to complete the outline properly. I frequently put off these things until I am drafting, and that’s when I should be focused on writing instead. I adhered to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I’ve actually overhauled my outline and research process by using this template. It’s a more productive part of the procedure now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, too.
