It may seem like a simple step. Simply open a new document and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I like to get a solid working name and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could accelerate his writing process ~600 percent by creating a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the exact same process for every single new article I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and above means that’s probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for the common Ghost blog post structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They’re just Markdown files, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to write. Click the”view raw” link on the bottom of each gist to observe the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file in your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot point using a few notes about what I should write in that section. By the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other nicely, since I understand the arrangement of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I’d actually planned to perform a full rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours just to have the outline done, so I set the draft off for another day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, and a solid idea about what each section would contain and how they would work together to create a sense of flow from the article. Though outlining took more than normal, drafting took time since I had put myself up for victory. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It was quite a different process to the way I normally work, and that I was tempted a couple of times to prevent the additional research or thinking necessary to complete the outline properly. I frequently put off these things till I’m drafting, and that’s when I must be focused on writing rather. I stuck to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I have really coined my outline and study process by applying this template. It’s a more effective part of my procedure now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, too.
