It may seem like an easy step. Just open a new document and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to have a strong working title and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he found he could accelerate his writing procedure ~600% by creating a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I had been repeating the exact same procedure for every single new post I work on. Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and above means that is probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for the common Ghost blog article arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They’re just Markdown files, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of each gist to observe the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file in your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot line using a few notes about what I need to write in that segment. From the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow into each other nicely, because I know the structure of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I’d really planned to perform a full rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a couple of hours simply to get the outline done, so I put the draft off for another day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a solid idea of what each segment would comprise and how they’d work together to create a sense of flow in the article. Even though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took time because I had set myself up for victory. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different procedure to how I normally do the job, and that I had been tempted a few times to avoid the extra research or thinking necessary to fill out the outline correctly. I frequently put off these things until I am drafting, which is when I should be focused on writing rather. I adhered to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I had.
I have really coined my outline and research procedure by applying this template. It’s a more effective part of the procedure now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, also.
