It might seem like an easy step. Just open a new document and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I like to have a strong working title and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could accelerate his writing process ~600% by creating an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I had been repeating the same process for every single new post I work . Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and above means that’s probably a good opportunity for automation.
So I decided to create a few templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for the common Ghost blog article arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They’re only Markdown files, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of every list to view the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file on your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot point with a few notes about what I need to write in that segment. By the time I’m done, I will have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other nicely, because I understand the arrangement of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my summarizing procedure became much more involved. I’d really planned to do a full rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a few hours simply to have the outline done, so that I set off the draft for a different day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a solid idea of what each segment would contain and how they would work together to create a feeling of flow in the post. Even though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took time because I had set myself up for victory. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different procedure to the way I normally do the job, and that I had been tempted a few times to prevent the additional research or thinking necessary to fill out the outline properly. I often put these things off until I’m drafting, which is when I must be focused on writing rather. I stuck to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I have actually overhauled my outline and research process by applying this template. It is a more productive part of the process now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, also.
