It might seem to be a simple step. Simply open a new document and start typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to have a solid working name and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he found he could speed up his composing process ~600% by creating an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the exact same procedure for every single new post I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and above means that is probably a good opportunity for automation.
So I decided to create some templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for my most common Ghost blog article structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They are just Markdown documents, so go ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link on the bottom of every list to observe the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file in your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot point using a few notes about what I should write in that segment. From the time I’m done, I will have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other nicely, because I know the structure of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became much more involved. I’d actually planned to do a full rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a couple of hours simply to have the outline done, so that I put off the draft for another day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a solid idea about what each segment would comprise and how they would work together to create a feeling of flow in the article. Though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took time because I’d put myself up for success. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different process to the way I normally do the job, and that I was tempted a few times to prevent the extra research or thinking required to complete the outline properly. I often put these things off until I am drafting, and that’s when I must be focused on writing rather. I adhered to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I have actually coined my outline and study process by applying this template. It is a more productive part of my process now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, also.
