It might look like a simple step. Simply open a new file and start typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to get a strong working title and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could speed up his composing procedure ~600 percent by producing an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the exact same process for every single new article I work . Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and over means that’s probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for the most common Ghost blog post structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They’re just Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of each list to observe the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file on your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot point with a few notes about what I should write in that section. By the time I’m done, I will have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other nicely, since I understand the arrangement of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I’d really planned to do a full rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a couple of hours simply to get the outline done, so that I put off the draft for a different day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, and a solid idea of what each section would contain and how they would work together to create a sense of flow from the post. Though outlining took more than normal, drafting took less time because I had put myself up for success. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different procedure to how I normally do the job, and I had been tempted a couple of times to avoid the additional research or thinking required to complete the outline properly. I frequently put these things off until I am drafting, and that’s when I must be focused on writing instead. I stuck to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I’ve actually overhauled my outline and research procedure by applying this template. It is a more productive part of my process now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, also.
