It may look like a simple step. Simply open a new file and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to have a solid working title and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could speed up his writing process ~600% by producing an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I had been repeating the same procedure for every new article I work . Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the same work over and over means that’s probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I began by developing a template for the common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They are just Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click on the”view raw” link on the bottom of each gist to view the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file on your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot point using a few notes about what I need to write in that segment. By the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other well, since I know the structure of the entire piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became more involved. I had actually planned to do a full rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours simply to get the outline done, so that I put off the draft for another day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a good idea about what each segment would comprise and how they would work together to create a sense of flow in the post. Even though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took less time since I’d set myself up for victory. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It was quite a different process to how I normally do the job, and I had been tempted a few times to avoid the extra research or thinking required to complete the outline correctly. I often put off these things till I am drafting, which is when I should be centered on writing rather. I stuck to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I have really coined my outline and study procedure by applying this template. It’s a more productive part of the procedure now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, too.
