It might seem like a simple step. Just open a new document and start typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I like to get a solid working name and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could accelerate his composing procedure ~600% by producing a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the same process for every new article I work . Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and above means that’s probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to create some templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for my common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They are only Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of every gist to observe the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file in your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot point with a couple of notes about what I should write in that section. By the time I’m done, I will have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow into each other nicely, because I understand the structure of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I’d really planned to do a full rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a few hours just to have the outline done, so that I put the draft off for a different day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a solid idea about what each segment would comprise and how they would work together to create a feeling of flow from the article. Even though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took time since I’d put myself up for success. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different procedure to how I normally work, and I had been tempted a few times to prevent the extra research or thinking required to fill out the outline properly. I frequently put these things off until I am drafting, which is when I should be centered on writing rather. I adhered to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I have really overhauled my outline and research procedure by using this template. It’s a more productive part of the procedure now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, too.
