It may look to be a simple step. Simply open a new file and begin typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to have a solid working title and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could accelerate his composing process ~600 percent by producing a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I had been repeating the same procedure for every new article I work on. Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and over means that is probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I began by developing a template for my most common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They’re only Markdown files, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of every list to view the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file on your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot point using a few notes about what I need to write in that section. From the time I’m done, I will have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow into each other nicely, since I know the arrangement of the entire piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became more involved. I’d actually planned to do a full rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours simply to get the outline done, so that I put the draft off for another day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a solid idea about what each segment would contain and how they would work together to create a sense of flow from the article. Even though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took less time since I’d set myself up for success. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different process to how I normally do the job, and I had been tempted a few times to prevent the extra research or thinking necessary to complete the outline properly. I often put off these things until I’m drafting, and that’s when I should be focused on writing rather. I stuck to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I had.
I’ve really overhauled my outline and research procedure by using this template. It is a more effective part of the process now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, too.
