It might seem like a simple step. Just open a new document and start typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I like to get a strong working title and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he found he could speed up his composing procedure ~600 percent by producing a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the same procedure for every new post I work on. Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and above means that’s probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I began by developing a template for my most common Ghost blog article structure. Since that structure’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They’re just Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of each list to observe the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file in your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot point using a couple of notes about what I should write in that segment. By the time I’m done, I will have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other well, because I know the arrangement of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I had really planned to perform a complete rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours simply to have the outline done, so that I put the draft off for a different day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a good idea about what each section would comprise and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow in the post. Though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took less time because I’d put myself up for success. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different process to how I normally do the job, and I had been tempted a couple of times to avoid the extra research or thinking required to fill out the outline correctly. I frequently put off these things until I’m drafting, which is when I must be focused on writing rather. I adhered to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I had.
I have actually overhauled my outline and research process by applying this template. It is a more effective part of my procedure now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, also.
