It may look to be an easy step. Simply open a new document and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to have a strong working name and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could accelerate his writing process ~600 percent by producing a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the same procedure for every new post I work . Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and over means that is probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to create a few templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for my common Ghost blog post structure. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I also created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They are just Markdown files, so go ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link on the bottom of each gist to view the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file in your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot point using a couple of notes about what I need to write in that section. By the time I’m done, I will have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow into each other nicely, because I know the arrangement of the entire piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I’d really planned to do a full rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a few hours just to have the outline done, so that I set off the draft for another day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a solid idea of what each section would comprise and how they’d work together to create a sense of flow from the post. Though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took less time since I had set myself up for victory. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different process to how I normally do the job, and that I had been tempted a couple of times to avoid the extra research or thinking necessary to complete the outline correctly. I frequently put these things off until I’m drafting, which is when I should be centered on writing rather. I adhered to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I had.
I’ve actually coined my outline and research procedure by using this template. It is a more effective part of my process now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it will lead to better work, also.
