It might look like a simple step. Just open a new document and start typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to get a strong working name and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could accelerate his composing process ~600% by producing an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the same process for every single new post I work . Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and over means that’s probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to create some templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for the common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I also created a template based on how John constructions his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They’re just Markdown files, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to write. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of every gist to observe the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file in your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot point using a couple of notes about what I should write in that section. By the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow into each other nicely, since I understand the structure of the entire piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I’d actually planned to perform a complete rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a couple of hours just to get the outline done, so that I put off the draft for another day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words written in my outline, and a good idea of what each section would comprise and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow in the post. Though outlining took more than normal, drafting took time because I’d set myself up for success. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different procedure to the way I normally do the job, and that I had been tempted a couple of times to prevent the extra research or thinking necessary to fill out the outline correctly. I frequently put these things off until I am drafting, and that’s when I should be centered on writing instead. I stuck to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I had.
I’ve really overhauled my outline and study process by applying this template. It’s a more effective part of the procedure now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, also.
