It might look to be an easy step. Just open a new file and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to get a solid working title and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he found he could accelerate his writing procedure ~600% by producing an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the exact same process for every new article I work . Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and over means that is probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to create a few templates for myself.
I began by developing a template for my most common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They are only Markdown documents, so go ahead and save , rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of every list to view the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file on your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot line with a few notes about what I should write in that segment. From the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow into each other nicely, since I know the structure of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became much more involved. I had really planned to perform a complete rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours just to get the outline done, so that I put off the draft for a different day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a solid idea of what each segment would contain and how they would work together to create a feeling of flow in the post. Even though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took time because I’d put myself up for success. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different procedure to how I normally work, and that I was tempted a few times to avoid the additional research or thinking necessary to complete the outline correctly. I often put off these things till I am drafting, which is when I should be centered on writing instead. I adhered to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I have really coined my outline and study procedure by using this template. It is a more productive part of my procedure now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, also.
