It might look like an easy step. Simply open a new document and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to have a strong working title and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he found he could speed up his composing procedure ~600% by creating an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the exact same process for every single new post I work . Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and above means that’s probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to create some templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for my most common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They are only Markdown documents, so go ahead and save , rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of each gist to view the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file on your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot line using a few notes about what I should write in that section. From the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other nicely, since I understand the arrangement of the entire piece in advance.
Using the template, I found that my summarizing procedure became much more involved. I’d actually planned to perform a full rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours just to have the outline done, so I set off the draft for another day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words written in my outline, and a good idea of what each section would comprise and how they’d work together to create a sense of flow in the article. Even though outlining took more than usual, drafting took time because I’d put myself up for victory. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different procedure to the way I normally do the job, and that I had been tempted a few times to prevent the additional research or thinking necessary to complete the outline correctly. I often put these things off till I’m drafting, and that’s when I must be focused on writing rather. I adhered to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I had.
I have really coined my outline and research process by applying this template. It is a more productive part of my process now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it will lead to better work, also.
