It may look to be an easy step. Just open a new file and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I like to get a solid working name and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he found he could speed up his writing procedure ~600% by creating an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the same procedure for every single new article I work on. Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and above means that is probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for my most common Ghost blog article structure. Since that structure’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They’re just Markdown documents, so go ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click the”view raw” link on the bottom of each gist to view the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file on your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot point with a couple of notes about what I should write in that section. From the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow into each other well, because I know the structure of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I’d actually planned to do a complete rough draft of that post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours simply to have the outline done, so I put off the draft for a different day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words written in my outline, and a solid idea of what each segment would contain and how they’d work together to create a sense of flow from the article. Though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took less time since I’d set myself up for success. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different procedure to the way I normally work, and I was tempted a few times to prevent the extra research or thinking required to complete the outline properly. I frequently put off these things until I’m drafting, which is when I should be centered on writing rather. I stuck to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I had.
I’ve actually overhauled my outline and study procedure by using this template. It is a more effective part of my process now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, also.
