It may seem like a simple step. Simply open a new document and begin typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to have a strong working title and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could speed up his writing process ~600% by creating a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the same procedure for every new article I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and over means that is probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to create some templates for myself.
I began by developing a template for my common Ghost blog post structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They are only Markdown files, so go ahead and save , rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of each gist to view the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file on your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot line using a few notes about what I need to write in that segment. From the time I’m done, I will have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow into each other nicely, because I understand the structure of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became more involved. I had actually planned to perform a full rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours simply to get the outline done, so that I set the draft off for another day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, and a good idea about what each section would contain and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow from the article. Though outlining took more than usual, drafting took less time since I had set myself up for success. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different procedure to how I normally do the job, and that I had been tempted a couple of times to prevent the extra research or thinking necessary to complete the outline properly. I often put these things off till I am drafting, which is when I should be focused on writing instead. I stuck to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I’ve actually coined my outline and research procedure by using this template. It’s a more effective part of my process now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, too.
