It might look to be a simple step. Simply open a new document and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to get a strong working name and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he found he could accelerate his writing procedure ~600 percent by producing a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the exact same process for every single new post I work . Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the same work over and over means that’s probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for the common Ghost blog article arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They’re only Markdown documents, so go ahead and save them, rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click on the”view raw” link on the bottom of each list to view the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file on your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot line with a few notes about what I need to write in that section. From the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow into each other nicely, because I understand the arrangement of the entire piece in advance.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became much more involved. I had really planned to do a complete rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours simply to have the outline done, so I set the draft off for another day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a good idea about what each segment would contain and how they would work together to create a sense of flow from the article. Though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took time since I had put myself up for victory. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different procedure to the way I normally do the job, and I was tempted a couple of times to prevent the extra research or thinking required to complete the outline correctly. I often put off these things until I’m drafting, and that’s when I must be focused on writing instead. I stuck to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I’ve really coined my outline and study process by using this template. It is a more productive part of the procedure now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, also.
